Lesson
A genuine referral grows from a good experience and permission to share a contact.

The idea
Ethical customer referrals. This lesson applies the same principle to three distinct stages of business.
Why it matters: Illustrative example: after a successful carpet cleaning, a business gives a customer a link to share voluntarily rather than asking for neighbors' private phone numbers.
Trust comes before referrals. A voluntary customer recommendation differs from a public review; a person named by someone else has not necessarily consented to outreach. Never buy positive reviews, and confirm platform and legal requirements before running incentive schemes.
Tracking example: twelve inquiries arrive in one month and four say they heard about the business through referrals. Those are not four sales. With appropriate consent, track how many become customers and compare channels. Ask satisfied clients what they would describe positively and use the feedback to address service weaknesses. Experienced owners should track referral quality and repeat business, not lists of private phone numbers.
Practical steps: 1. IDEA: practice describing your offer in one sentence that a satisfied customer could repeat. 2. STARTING: politely ask for referrals after providing good service, and record where new inquiries originate. 3. ESTABLISHED: track referrals by service and improve follow-up without pressuring customers. 4. PRACTICE — Draft: «Thank you for trusting us. If you know someone who could use our service, feel free to share our profile.» 5. REFLECT — What decision would you change today, and what real information do you still need before spending money?
An important note: Referral requests differ from online reviews. Consult review policies: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474122 . Do not buy positive reviews.
