Lesson
By the end you will be able to describe your customer in a single sentence.
12 min read5 min activity
Focusing does not mean refusing anyone. It means knowing who you speak to first.
What you'll learn
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
The idea
When you speak to everyone, your message has to be so general that it says nothing special to anyone. It is like talking in a crowded plaza: many people hear you, but nobody feels you are talking to them.
When you know who needs you most, you can talk about their problem in their own words. That person reads your message and thinks: “this is for me.”
Knowing your customer puts three things in order: your pricing (what they value and why they would pay for it), your advertising (where to show up and what to say), and your decisions (what to offer first and what to say no to for now).
You are not closing the door. You are deciding who you greet first.
Picture it
01
Everyone
Anyone could buy from you. That is why it is not a useful description.
02
Who needs it most
The group with the problem you solve best.
Illustrative example
Rosa is planning to sell cakes from home. Her first idea was “cakes for every occasion, for everyone.” Before spending on packaging and ads, she looked at who she had already baked for: almost always families in her neighborhood who wanted a custom birthday cake and messaged her on WhatsApp with two or three days' notice. She decided to start with them.
Rosa still serves whoever shows up. But now she knows who she speaks to first, and her message finally says something to someone.
Compare
Weak description · Does not help
“My customer is anyone who wants to buy.”
It does not tell you what to write, where to advertise, or what to offer first.
Strong description · Helps
“Families in my neighborhood who need custom birthday cakes with 2–3 days' notice and prefer to order by WhatsApp.”
Your turn
Answer in your own words. The sentence is built only from what you type: if you leave something blank, it stays blank. Your first version is an assumption; you will check it later.

version 2
I am thinking about starting a small business in [city]. I am not selling yet: I am exploring the idea before I spend money. This is what I currently believe about my customer. Treat it as hypotheses, not facts: What I sell: [what you sell] Who I think needs it most: [who needs it most] The problem I think I solve: [what problem you solve] Where I think I can reach them: [where they are] Why I think they may choose me: [why they would choose you] Act as a patient business mentor and use plain language. Guide with stewardship, service, integrity, excellence, responsibility, and wisdom. Profit is necessary: it should help the business survive, pay people, reinvest, serve better, and leave something sustainable. Do not advise domination, manipulation, inflated promises, or growth for its own sake. Do not quote religion or preach. 1. First tell me what I still need to learn and ask me about it. Do not make it up. 2. Then help me organize 2 or 3 possible customer groups using only what I tell you. 3. For each group, help me decide what to test with real people, cheaply, before I spend heavily. Do not invent facts about my customers or my market. If you assume something, label it as an assumption and tell me how I could check it.
There are still blanks in brackets. You can fill them in here or directly in your assistant.
Before you paste: remove your customers' personal details. Afterwards: check what matters with real people.

I am thinking about starting a small business in [city]. I am not selling yet: I am exploring the idea before I spend money. This is my starting point. These are my own assumptions: What I sell: [what you sell] Who I think needs it most: [who needs it most] The problem I think I solve: [what problem you solve] Where I think I can reach them: [where they are] Why I think they may choose me: [why they would choose you] Do not give me answers yet. Interview me: ask me about 5 questions, one at a time, and wait for my answer before asking the next one. Ask me about the problem, about who really has it, and about what I still do not know. When I finish answering, summarize in my own words what you learned about my customer, point out what is still an assumption, and tell me what I should ask real people. Do not invent anything I have not told you.

Separate what I seem to actually know from what I am only assuming. If it is not clear, ask me. 2. Point out the 2 or 3 weakest or riskiest assumptions and explain why. 3. For each one, tell me how I could check it by talking to real people, cheaply, before I spend. Do not present market facts as if they were certain: if you did not get them from me, say so.

AI helps. You verify. What real customers tell you outranks any guess an AI makes.
Common mistake
The mistake
Choosing the customer you wish you had, instead of learning from the people who actually buy or show interest.
Do this instead
Start from the evidence: who has bought, asked, or recommended you? Describe those people first.
Key words
Checklist
Verify
Before you change your whole business because of an AI answer, or your own guess, talk to 3 real customers or people who could become one.
AI helps. You verify.
In short
Your customer is not “everyone”: when you speak to all, nobody feels spoken to.
Focusing is not refusing; it is knowing who you speak to first.
A clear customer has four parts: who, problem, where, and why you. And it is checked with real people.
